Creating the Raised Beds
This was a steep lawned area that was becoming overcrowded by a fast growing conifer hedge. In terms of growing space, it didn’t have much to offer.
As the conifers took up so much room, it was agreed that these would be removed to make greater use of the garden area by adding in some raised beds. These beds needed to be easily accessible and provide enough space to grow a selection of vegetables.
We removed the large conifers to widen the available area and allow more light in. The beds were then constructed using concrete spur posts and pressure treated timber, this combination will keep them strong and sturdy for years to come.
The sides of each bed were lined with polythene and filled using a method known as hugelkultur then topped with mineral rich topsoil ready for planting.
